Over-steer on a turn and “uh-oh” enters your mind as
you lose traction – and control – and begin a
panic-stricken dance of maneuvers to maintain. But
for drifters, over steering is intentional and it’s
all about control. Crazy they’re not; instead, they
practice a perfect balance of power, inertia, force
and skill. And cool.
Drifting is a modern technique whereby drivers
intentionally over-steer, sliding the car at an angle
and moving in the direction of the turn. Typical
drift cars are Japanese-made, lightweight “tuners.”
During the drift, the rear wheels lose traction and
the front wheels are pointing in the opposite
direction of the turn. The competition is judged
based on line, angle, speed and show factor.
